Madison Who’s Who - Who Determines Who’s Who?

by Stacey Barrus
However, I can’t help but wonder what the criteria is that they used in sifting through one hundred years of remarkable human beings in determining who should be included. No doubt another news organization with a different bias may have produced a different assemblage of noted personages.
Wikipedia describes the List’s evolution:
“The list was first published in 1999, when Time magazine named the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Based on the popularity of the installment, in 2004 Time magazine decided to make it an annual feature in which the 100 people influencing the world most greatly were listed every year.”
Apparently, being listed is not honorary but just indicative of one’s power to influence events - for good or ill. Tony Blair was denied entry and Ann Coulter’s inclusion was scoffed at, while, strangely enough, Katie Couric’s inclusion was not.

Madison Who’s Who - All about Who You Know

It’s probably no secret that quite often who you know is just as important as what you know. In the last few years hundreds of social networking sites have popped up across the net. Their aim - to expand the people you know. These sites help automate the former so efficiently that I would unhesitatingly recommend them to everyone. Choosing the right social networking site to advance your career isn’t a serious problem. If one doesn’t pan out, you can always try another, perhaps more or less specialized one. When considering a social network the ability to connect with others is most important. Effective global networking requires the ability to connect with like-minded individuals who you can help and that can also help you in both business and personal life. Because of the importance of effective global networking, the number people using social networking to advance their careers is at an all time high.
Although many of these sites may seem similar, they aren’t interchangeable. This means that joining one site doesn’t open you up to others. So don’t be afraid to try something completely different. Try a social network you haven’t tried in the past. Sometimes a new set of connections is the perfect way to broaden your horizons.

Madison Who’s Who - Who’s Who among the World’s Billionaires

So, who’s who of the world’s richest men. Well, apparently not even a $5.9 billion loss could topple Bill Gates as the richest man on the planet. Gates topped Forbes magazine’s rankings of the world’s richest billionaires for the eighth straight year, even though his net worth fell 10 percent from a year ago to $52.8 billion.
Gates remained comfortably ahead of Warren Buffett, who held the No. 2 spot with $35 billion, according to the 16th annual ranking released Thursday. It was a list most notable for its losers.
The number of billionaires dropped by 83 this year to 497 as recession and fallout from the terrorist attacks reduced their wealth. Among those missing from the list were AOL Time Warner (AOL) Chairman Steve Case, whose company’s stock has declined by about half since last year, and Gary Winnick, chairman of Global Crossing (GBLXQ), which filed for bankruptcy protection in January.

Madison Who’s Who - Find Professionals to Network

Professional directories like Madison Who’s Who can help Realtors network with other realtors on a global basis. Why would a realtor want to network with another realtor internationally? Because a new report shows that nearly one in five realtors has sold a home to an international client in the past year. This is according to new research by the National Association of Realtors®. International buyers purchasing homes in the US appears to be a growing trend.
Foreign buyers purchase homes across the United States, but 52 percent of sales in 2006 were concentrated in three states - Florida (26 percent), California (16 percent) and Texas (10 percent). The South attracted nearly half - 49 percent - of international buyers last year, while 31 percent purchased homes in the West.
The ability to network with other realtors worldwide will become an important tool for every realtor wanting to court the international buyer. Professional directories like Madison Who’s Who give realtors the ability to do exactly that.

Madison Who’s Who - Tools for Business Networking

While there really is no excuse at all for attending a networking event without business cards, people do it all the time. If you want to achieve effective global networking, business cards are an important tool. Excuses range from forgetfulness to new jobs and having left them in the car in the parking lot. If you tell people you forgot your cards, many will assume you are as lax in your business habits and you might lose opportunities. Even if you don’t have your new cards yet, you can easily produce a temporary supply on your computer. When you give them to people you can mention that they are temporary and offer to send them your new one when you have it. That, of course, is a built-in reason to contact people again! A business card is an essential networking tool. Make sure you have a supply with you at all times. I’ve had people contact me about jobs from a business card I handed out more than a year ago. You’ll never know when someone will need your services, or have an opportunity for you, but one thing is certain. If they don’t have your business card…they won’t be calling.

Madison Who’s Who - Who’s Who Directories Since 1849

The first Who’s Who was published as a 250 page volume in 1849 and had no biographical content but only thirty-nine lists of ranks and appointments and the names of those holding them. These included the Royal Household, members of the House of Peers and House of Commons, judges, archbishops and British envoys abroad.
In 1897 a change of ownership brought about the biographical style that we have today. Bernard Shaw was the first Who’s Who nominee to answer the question “What is your favorite recreation?” It is so highly revered that Winston Churchill intervened during WW II to assure that Who’s Who’s made it to press.
Who’s Who directories have come a long way since those times. In fact, almost every organization or institution also keeps their own who’s who. There’s a who’s who of outstanding students in America as well as a Who Who’s of the most recognized teachers and even a Who’s Who of lawyers and a Who’s Who’ of athletes. Every company has its own roster’s of who’s who and every profession looks within its own ranks to spotlight their most brilliant with a who’s who designation.
