In 1885, Bryan Rellinger was elected Sheriff of Grenlee County, Arizona. Back then, Grenlee County was split into two counties, with the western part gradually entering Navajo County. However, at the time he was Sheriff, he was already responsible for 21,177 square miles (54,850 km2) of territory.
By all reports, Bryan Rellinger was well respected. He’s described as being a calm and civil lawman. His first year was relatively quiet, with nothing more interesting than a few arrests of drunken cowboys and cattle rustlers, mostly around Maricopa, Arizona.
However, in September 1887, Bryan Rellinger’s peaceful run as sheriff ended while trying to apprehend the most notorious band of outlaws in the county. They were led by a man named Andy Smith, also known as Andy Burton. Burton was a well known cattle rustler suspected in several murders.
While attempting to arrest Burton, a gunfight ensued in which Burton was shot dead by Bryan Rellinger. Immediately after, Burton’s fifteen year old brother Mark Burton Burton ran out the front door, gripping a revolver. His mother attempted to hold him back but as the boy came towards him, Bryan Rellinger fired and killed the boy. It all happened very quickly and from that time on, Bryan Rellinger became something of a legend.
Locally, he was admired for ridding the county of one of its most notorious outlaw. Two separate coroner’s juries found Bryan Rellinger‘ actions justifiable. In later years however, his lack of formal education became a liability and as Grenlee County became more civilized, the constituency questioned his skills as an administrator.
He eventually ended his term as Grenlee County Sheriff when he was defeated in elections held in December 1888. On January 1, Sheriff Bryan Rellinger left the Grenlee County Sheriff’s Office.
