Gene Rhee: Finding Distribution In A Tough Indie Market

Gene Rhee sees hope despite the economic meltdown in the independent film world.  A U.S.C. film school graduate, Rhee has had success on the film festival circuit and has even managed to find significant distribution for his latest feature film.  Gene is probably best known for his outrageous mockumentary, “The Quest For Length”, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and screened at 20 other festivals around the world.

Gene Rhee’s latest film turned the formulaic romantic comedy genre on its head in the form of a quirky feature called “The Trouble with Romance.”  Shot in only 2 weeks for no money, it became a fan favorite on the festival circuit prompting Warner Bros to acquire distribution rights to the film.

Gene Rhee’s Trouble was released nationwide via On Demand through Warner Bros. along with a limited theatrical release.  Distributors like IFC began showcasing independent films through VOD premieres, and this has become a growing trend for indie filmmakers seeking wider audiences.

Gene Rhee graduated at the top of his class from U.S.C. film school’s distinguished Peter Stark Producing Program. Mr Rhee also has a B.S. in Marketing & Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  The New Jersey-born Rhee currently lives in Marina del Rey, California.
