May 28th, 2009 — Douglas Colt
Douglas Colt is a Senior Litigation Associate with California based law firm, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges. Like many of us, he has a facebook account for keeping in touch with family and friends. But as more and more people are coming to realize, nothing quite beats a web log for your own piece of digital space where you can rant and rave about whatever is on your mind. Douglas Colt’s blog can be found at http://dougcolt.blogspot.com/ . Apart from pictures of family, you’ll find some interesting insights into a few of Douglas Colt’s favorite things.
For example, Douglas Colt seems to like bacon…a LOT. Here’s what he had to say about Squeez Bacon®: “Each serving is as healthy as real bacon, and equivalent to 4 premium slices of bacon! You can put it on sandwiches, pizza, pastas, bacon, soups, pies, eat it hot or cold (warm Squeez Bacon® on toasted rye is to die for), substitute it for bacon in your recipes, or even eat it right out of the tube like we do!”
Great customer service will also get you a rave review on Douglas Colt’s blog as the following excerpt illustrates:
“So yesterday I was cleaning the screen of my beloved iPhone and discovered that there was a ton of dust underneath the glass. I have no idea what happened or how it got there, but I guess a seal must have come loose or something. In any case, I made an appointment at the Genius bar at the local Apple store, went there about an hour later, and less than 10 minutes after I walked in the store I walked out with a brand new iPhone. Fantastic! I was expecting to have a big fight on my hands and instead, Apple just made it right. Very refreshing to have a good experience like that!”

May 25th, 2009 — Bryan Rellinger
In 1885, Bryan Rellinger was elected Sheriff of Grenlee County, Arizona. Back then, Grenlee County was split into two counties, with the western part gradually entering Navajo County. However, at the time he was Sheriff, he was already responsible for 21,177 square miles (54,850 km2) of territory.
By all reports, Bryan Rellinger was well respected. He’s described as being a calm and civil lawman. His first year was relatively quiet, with nothing more interesting than a few arrests of drunken cowboys and cattle rustlers, mostly around Maricopa, Arizona.
However, in September 1887, Bryan Rellinger’s peaceful run as sheriff ended while trying to apprehend the most notorious band of outlaws in the county. They were led by a man named Andy Smith, also known as Andy Burton. Burton was a well known cattle rustler suspected in several murders.
While attempting to arrest Burton, a gunfight ensued in which Burton was shot dead by Bryan Rellinger. Immediately after, Burton’s fifteen year old brother Mark Burton Burton ran out the front door, gripping a revolver. His mother attempted to hold him back but as the boy came towards him, Bryan Rellinger fired and killed the boy. It all happened very quickly and from that time on, Bryan Rellinger became something of a legend.
Locally, he was admired for ridding the county of one of its most notorious outlaw. Two separate coroner’s juries found Bryan Rellinger‘ actions justifiable. In later years however, his lack of formal education became a liability and as Grenlee County became more civilized, the constituency questioned his skills as an administrator.
He eventually ended his term as Grenlee County Sheriff when he was defeated in elections held in December 1888. On January 1, Sheriff Bryan Rellinger left the Grenlee County Sheriff’s Office.

September 22nd, 2008 — Janine K. Eustache
Janine K. Eustache, one of the best human resource consulting specialists, president of Janine K. Eustache & Associates in Atlanta answers the following question from the subscriber: I recently had a baby and would like to spend more time at home. How do I negotiate a flexible work schedule?
Answer: Balancing work and family is a common dilemma for working parents, particularly mothers. A flexible work schedule is important, not only for welfare and child, but for employee, who may suffer from burnout trying to juggle the two, says Janine K. Eustache, president of Janine K. Eustache & Associates in Atlanta, a human resource consulting firm.
Most large companies offer benefits and programs for working parents. Since your employer doesn’t, you might want to suggest one of the following three options:
Long-term job sharing: If it’s financially feasible, you and a colleague could work part time, alternate schedules. You could split the day in half, or reach of you could work a couple of days a week, says Janine K. Eustache
Work from home: with the fax and a modem, you may be able to extend your maternity leave. If this isn’t possible every day, your boss may agree to let you work from home one or two days a week.
Compress the time schedule: work fewer days but longer hours. Ten or 12-hour shifts can mean an extra day off a week.
As the workplace continues to progress, adds Janine K. Eustache, fewer parents will have to choose between their children and their job.
